MCPC works to prevent marijuana use through:
Policy, Practice, or Procedure Change
Increase the practice of caregivers discussing the dangers of marijuana and THC Vape risks with youth through coordinated messaging campaigns and school partnerships.
Establish a practice of parents/caregivers discussing marijuana use/misuse at least annually.
Providing Information
Develop and disseminate a community-wide marijuana prevention education campaign focused on: THC Potency, Brain Development, Vape-Specific Risks.
Disseminate marijuana risk fact sheets at universal community touch points (libraries, schools, juvenile court, health department, community events).
Maintain consistent social media messaging addressing marijuana myths vs. facts.
Building Skills
Train youth to serve as peer educators on marijuana risks and THC vape harms.
Provide refusals skills and decision-making training through evidenced based curricula.
Providing Support
Implement parent training including marijuana-specific content (vapes, perception, communication skills, Talk. They Hear You).
Provide parents and community members with marijuana prevention education toolkits (conversation guides, fact sheets, early warning signs).
Increase Barriers/Reduce Access
Promote safe storage norms in the home through universal education campaigns.
Provide medication lockboxes to schools, clinics, healthcare providers and parent groups for safe storage of medications.
Reduce Barriers/Increase Access
Provide Redline telephone number for treatment services on printed and electronic materials.
Increase access to accurate marijuana prevention information through schools, events, and digital platforms.
Changing Incentives/Consequences
Publicly recognize outstanding community partners at an annual awards event and through media.
Begin a media campaign to publicly recognize a “Partner of the Quarter” for sector agencies that contribute to the mission of the coalition.
Changing the Physical Design of the Environment
Post marijuana prevention education signage in universal community locations (clinics, pharmacies, schools, community centers, health department).
Place THC Vape awareness signage in high-risk youth areas (nurses office, counselor waiting areas, parent resource centers).
