Naloxone (also known as Narcan®) is a medication called an “opioid antagonist” that is used to counter the effects of opioid overdose.
Naloxone works to reverse and block the effects of opioids like heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, and morphine. Substances like cychlorphine and non-opioid drugs like benzodiazepines, xylazine, bath salts, cocaine, methamphetamine, and alcohol are naloxone resistant.
