What is a Primary Care Provider (PCP)? A PCP is your main doctor for regular checkups, health concerns, and managing chronic conditions. They can refer you to specialists, help manage prescriptions, and support your overall health—including mental health and substance use recovery.
-Look at your insurance card or visit the website.
-Search for providers listed as “in-network.”
IMPORTANT: Even if a provider is listed online, always call to confirm they still accept your insurance.
Family Practice: Treats people of all ages.
Internal Medicine: Focuses on adults and complex conditions.
General Practice: Similar to family medicine.
NOTE: You can also see a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in primary care settings.
-Ask family, friends, sober living homes, or your case manager.
-Location and hours.
-Do they offer telehealth?
-Do they have availability soon?
-Are they LGBTQ+ affirming or trauma-informed?
-Are you accepting new patients?
-Do you take my insurance? (Name your insurance.)
-How long until I can get an appointment?
-Do you offer same-day or walk-in appointments?
–Bring your ID, insurance card, and list of medications.
-Be honest about your substance use history and mental health needs. They are there to help, not judge.
–Did I feel heard and respected?
-Did they explain things in a way I understood?
-Would I want to go back?
